Harmonious Motion
rating: 0+x

By Ladikn

Type, Artifact Weapon •••••

Large and unusually thick for a standard Daiklave, Harmonious Motion seems to be too bulky for it’s name at first glance. The blade is made of interlocking Oricalcum plates and various tiny Jade scales in a prismatic array, but the most fascinating aspect of the sword reveals itself in combat. While under significant speed or pressure, the sword expands slightly, revealing thousands of interlocking gears within, ranging in size from a few centimeters to a few millimeters, as well as moonsilver springs and adamant crystalline frameworks holding the whole sword together.

When Harmonious Motion moves or impacts other objects (and people), excess motion is stored in it’s gearworks and springs. This stored power can be used to power it’s unusual evocations. allowing its wielder to apply the stored motion into the blade. Some mathematically minded sorcerers can even harness this excess power to fuel their sorcerous powers.

Evocations of Harmonious Motion

The gears within Harmonious Motion whir and tick in reaction to sudden changes in velocity, transferring the kinetic energy into essence. Whenever Harmonious Motion is used to attack or parry, it generates 1 momentum, which is stored inside the blade itself. Out of combat, Harmonious Motion generates 1 momentum an hour, as it stores ambient energy. As the blade stores motes, its crystalline substructures glow brighter (out of combat, shutters can cover the openings to hide the crystals). Harmonious Motion can hold a maximum of 5 + (Evocations Unlocked * 3) momentum.

While Harmonious Motion has any momentum in it’s storage, it does +14 damage (like a large artifact weapon) instead of +12, but loses the balanced tag.

If the wielder is a Sorcerer, he can use a maximum of (evocations learned) momentum as sorcerous motes with a stunt showing how he is using Harmonious Motion to cast the spell. This is a shaping ritual.

Peculiarly Forceful Slash
Cost: 3+ momentum; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Supplementary
Keywords: Uniform
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: None

With a sudden loud tick, the gears of Harmonious Motion align and activate at once, releasing stored energy into an unfortunate foe, pressing through any prepared defenses with impossible speed and power. For every 3 momentum spent on this Evocation, apply a -1 defense and soak to the target for the attack.

If the attack hits and deals damage, the gears wind sprockets and reset the mechanism, returning 1 momentum for every 3 spent. If this caused the opponent's defense to be reduced to 0 as well, the foe is knocked prone or thrown back short distance, as if hit with a smashing attack.

When used against an inanimate object, the player rolls Strength + Melee to break the object, adding a non-charm success for every 2 momentum spent on this evocation.

Modular Design Philosophy
Cost: 3 momentum; Mins: Essence 1
Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: One scene
Prerequisites: None

Gears shift, brackets undo and clasp, and metal seems to morph as thousands of articulated plates slide against each other, allowing Harmonious Motion to shift its form to meet its wielder's desire and power. Use of this charm allows Harmonious Motion to gain a new tag for the rest of the scene. Perhaps it elongates into a whip-sword for flexible, or it’s tip contracts into a fine point for piercing. Harmonious Motion can only have a number of additional tags equal to its wielder's Essence.

Modular Design Philosophy can only be used once per turn.

Unstoppable Force, Immovable Object
Cost: 4 momentum; Mins: Essence 2
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Dual
Duration: Instant
Prerequisites: Peculiarly Forceful Slash

Perfecting the manipulation of motion, Harmonious Motion ignores the kinetic energy of everything else, catching many off guard. This charm has two primary uses. When used to make an attack it halves the enemies soak from armor. In addition, while attacking, the disarm gambit can destroy mortal weapons and shields. When used to parry an attack, add the user’s parry rating to their soak, as the enemies blows ricochet off Harmonious Motion as if it were immovable.

….it has TEETH?!
Cost: -; Mins: Essence 3
Type: Permanent
Keywords: None
Duration: Permanent
Prerequisites: Modular Design Philosophy

As the rapport between Harmonious Motion and the Solar grows, it can adapt itself into ever more complex shapes and forms. This evocation upgrades its prerequisite, adding new tags that can be used by Harmonious Motion. These new tags sometimes come at a higher cost. Each of these tags counts as two towards the weapons cap of Essence additional tags.

Grinding: The namesake of this evocation, this charm causes serrated teeth to extend down the blade of Harmonious Motion. The teeth then quickly rotate into the Daiklave, making a bloody mess of whomever is unfortunate enough to be hit by it. This reduces the soak of enemies by 6 and increases the overwhelming of Harmonious Motion by 2. This is not stackable with the Piercing or Balanced keywords. This tag requires 1 momentum a turn to upkeep.

Flexing (4 momentum): The blade of Harmonious Motion segments, sinews of flexible metal connecting each section. This has the same effect as the Flexible and Reaching keywords, as well as allowing the user to make attacks out to short range for 2 momentum and 2i per tick.

Drilling: Rounding out and spinning rapidly, quickly destroying any mundane material it comes in contact with. This allows Harmonious Motion to destroy up to 2 feet of material a turn, even stone or steel (see Molten Sun Blade). This effect costs 1 momentum a turn to upkeep.

Barbed (6 momentum): Thousands of tiny, ripping spines of soulsteel sprout from the blade of Harmonious Motion, tearing not only into the flesh, but the soul. This causes wounds caused by Harmonious Motion to be aggravated, and for 1 momentum per attack can affect dematerialized spirits.

Convergence of Harmonic Motion
Cost: 10 momentum; Mins: Essence 4
Type: Simple
Keywords: None
Duration: One scene
Prerequisites: Unstoppable Force, Immovable Object, …it has TEETH?!

Tightly gripping Harmonic Motion in both hands, the blade glows with a ticking, prismatic light. Swinging the blade now seems less moving a sword, and more moving Creation around the sword, as if Harmonious Motion was the anchor point of Creation. It passes through objects and people as if they were made of paper.

While this charm is active, Harmonious Motion generates 2 momentum a turn in addition to its other methods of mote generation. This power is taken from the surrounding environment, as motion seems to slow down. While within long range of Harmonious Motion, everything except it’s wielder can no longer take automatic movement actions, instead treating all movement as a simple action. All rolls that require dexterity or strength take a -2 penalty. In addition, when using Peculiarly Forceful Slash to break an object while this charm is active, add an additional non-charm success per 2 momentum spent.

While active, Harmonious Motion gains the Two-Handed and Unstoppable tags.

Unstoppable: The weapon is a force of pure, unstoppable motion. It ignores half of the enemy soak from armor. If combined with Unstoppable Force, Immovable Object it ignores all of the enemies soak from armor.
